Mr. PARK Yong Dai, former Administrator of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) passed away on 17 December 2011 at the age of 79. Mr. Park became the first Administrator as the Central Meteorological Station (CMS) was promoted to what is known as today’s administration on 27 December 1990.

Mr. Park acquired B.S. in physics from Yonsei University in 1954, and completed his master’s course at Flinders University.

He started his career at the CMS as Director of the Planning Division, and served as Head of the Korea’s National Meteorological Service from 1988 to 1993, devoting himself to enhancing human resources and institutional infrastructure for meteorological services of the Republic of Korea.

Under his outstanding leadership, in 1990 CMS began providing weekly forecasts to the public every day that used to be issued twice a week and automatically producing weather charts at regional offices by establishing the communication network for distribution of weather forecast products.

In 1991 KMA set up the NWP Division to operate regional models for Asia, Far East Asia, and the Korean Peninsula.

In 1992 KMA built the weather radar network composed of five Doppler radars at Gwanak Mountain, Gunsan, Jeju, Busan and Donghae, and started to dispatch one junior professional officer (JPO) to WMO through an arrangement with WMO.

Mr. Park left his wife and three sons behind.
