KMA has participated in the International Co-ordination Group for the Pacific Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (ICG/PTWS) since holding the seventeenth session in Korea, 1999. With this as a momentum, KMA was able to initiate to strengthen seismological observation, tsunami warning system and related research. The IUGG-IOC joint workshop, held in conjunction with PTWS-XVII, was also a milestone to integrate and promote the national capability for the mitigation of tsunami disaster.

  In addition, KMA keeps watching seismic signals and sea level variations around the coast of Japan, in order to monitor seismic events and tsunamis in the region and reduce tsunami disasters in Korea and Japan.
